Monhegan sits ten miles off the coast of Maine. A small group of families have kept homes there for generations. They tend their gardens, hang laundry, mow the graves, and watch out for one another. The lighthouse has stood on the hill above the village since the 1850s. I was there for four days, looking through the fog.
