Helen
I met Helen my last morning at Casa Materna, a maternity care home in the western highlands of Guatemala. She was twenty-two, her baby was in the hospital recovering from two surgeries, struggling for its life and yet she was the most magnetic person in the room. Warm, steady, leading the other women through conversation at breakfast like none of it had shaken her. I came to Guatemala to make a film about Casa Materna's twenty-five years of service to indigenous women in the highlands. I made a film about Helen instead.
